The MTEL GOLF MASTERS TOURNAMENT made its inaugural debut on the 31st of August 2008 at St.Sofia Golf Club & Spa. This golfing initiative, the first for MTEL in Bulgaria, was the brainchild of Chief Marketing Officer Andreas Maierhofer who participated in the event. And what an entry it was. Golfers were treated generously to handouts at registration, and a fantastic array of prizes and trophies. After prize-giving music was supplied by one of the top jazz groups in Bulgaria and the day started with a swing and ended with a swing! The tournament was well-supported with seventy players teeing it up in the shotgun start. This was a terrific turn-out of golfers and is evidence of the growing popularity of the game in Bulgaria.  There were three divisions: The A Division for men played stroke-play, B Division for men played singles stableford, and the Ladies Division played singles stableford. The A Division winner was Valentin Arizanov on 66 nett, three shots clear of Oleg Chernev on 69. Mark Vanderlooy picked up third place with a 70 nett. B Division winner was Stoyan Dimitrov with 39 points. He edged out Steffen Moench on a count-out also on 39 points. Third place went to Borislav Velkov with 38 points.

In the Ladies Division, Kimiko Takeda was the clear winner with 45 stableford points. Bojana Dimitrova was second with 38 points and Astrid Kaufmann third with 37 points. Mike Hennessy won nearest to the pin on the 15th hole, while longest drive for men went to Stefan Kralchev and longest drive for ladies to Iliana Dimitrova. The day was a huge success with the players and guests partying to the sounds of the jazz music and enjoying cocktails and drinks.
